Lazio’s Serie A title chances are slipping away, and Spanish defender Patric doesn’t appear to be handling it very well.
In the waning moments of Lazio’s 2-1 loss to relegation-threatened Lecce, Patric bit defender Giulio Donati in the arm, a clear red-card violation–not to mention an act that is doubly troubling in the coronavirus pandemic era.
The lashing out will surely cost Patric more than just the typical one-game suspension for a red card, and could well end his season, depending on the league’s disciplinary procedure. For precedent sake, Luis Suarez was banned 10 games by the English FA for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in 2013 and another nine international matches for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in the 2014 World Cup.
Lazio has now dropped consecutive games in the league, after seriously threatening to end Juventus’s reign as Italian champion. The loss was mitigated a little bit after Juventus blew a 2-0 lead to AC Milan and missed the chance to open up a 10-point lead with its 4-2 defeat later on Tuesday. Lazio and Juventus do have one head-to-head matchup left, but even so, the lead sits at seven points with seven matches to play, with Juventus closing in on its ninth straight domestic title.
